Awd
Tuts Cottage
A Grade 2 17th century listed building -
almost 400 years old Awd Tuts Cottage, was built in 1640 when
Charles the First sat on the throne of England. Charles, who was
later executed by beheading never had the chance to stay in our
cosy cottage - pity! On the 30th January 1648, Charles was taken
to the 'execution block' outside Whitehall Palace. Troopers on
horseback kept the crowds some distance from the executioner's
platform and it is unlikely that many people heard the speech
he made just before a single swing of the axe rendered him headless!
Awd Tuts Cottage however, whilst being from the same historic
era now offers modern comfort by the
harbourside, in the cobbled centre of old Whitby town. 'Awd
Tuts' is a four-storey, ex-fisherman's cottage with low ceilings,
wooden beams and excellent facilities.
Enjoy the character
of this well-preserved building at its very best. Imagine the
cottage's previous existence as a humble dwelling of the fisherfolk
that helped mould Whitby into the bustling town it is today.
The cottage is ideally situated, being
located within cobbled streets, amongst the ancient history
of Whitby Abbey and its famous 199 steps, the Jet Works, old Kipper-Smoking
Sheds, Market Square, numerous quaint shops, restaurants, tea
rooms and picturesque harbour. The old quarter of Whitby is on
the east side of the River Esk.
